Microsoft’s List Of 800 Windows Vista-Compatible Apps

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Earlier this week, Microsoft published a list of 800 applications that should run properly on its new Windows Vista operating system. On its Web site, Microsoft says the number of applications certified for use with Windows Vista is constantly growing and that its list "will be update weekly."Virtually all of Microsoft’s own offerings are on the list. Also included are a host of business and security applications from vendors ranging from Intuit to Trend Micro. Desktop applications from Google made it in, but some of the world’s biggest software companies, including Adobe Systems, IBM, and Symantec didn’t make the cut. Tech industry analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group blames the fact that IBM and Adobe are becoming increasingly competitive with Microsoft in the desktop applications market. Also absent from the list is any software from Apple. Enderle thinks Apple has purposely chosen not to make some of its more popular applications, such as iTunes, Vista-compatible.

Adobe adopts product activation

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Adobe Systems Inc. has completed tests on product activation, and plans to roll out the technology soon.

Microsoft quietly introduced product activation 脙垄芒鈥毬⑩偓聺 a method of registering software so that it cannot be installed on more than one machine 脙垄芒鈥毬⑩偓聺 in 2001, with the second service pack for Microsoft Office 2000.

It has since been included in Office XP as well as Windows XP.

The technique is used to prevent revenue loss due to piracy. The Business Software Alliance, of which Adobe is a member, has estimated that annually, billions of dollars have been lost as a result of people passing copies of program disks around to friends.

Adobe’s software has in the past been protected by a serial number, which the user had to type into the installation program. But licence keys have been posted in many Usenet news groups, and “key generators” 脙垄芒鈥毬⑩偓聺 software that can generate a working serial number for a given program 脙垄芒鈥毬⑩偓聺 are also becoming popular.

Embedded activation elements been recently been added to software that requires consumers to register their programs upon installation.

Embedded technology also limits the number of times a single software copy can be loaded onto a desktop or laptop.

Adobe test run was done in Australia on Photoshop 7.0.
