Windows Vista beta 1 also includes the first beta of Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly known by the code name Avalon) and Windows Communication Foundation (formerly known by the code name Indigo which are part of the WinFX™ programming model. WinFX extends the Microsoft .NET Framework with classes for building new user interface experiences and advanced Web services. Together, they enable developers to build connected systems that take advantage of the processing power of the smart client, incorporate cutting-edge media and graphics, and communicate with other applications with improved security and reliability.

Indigo and Avalon are the codenames for two strategic developer technologies that Microsoft plans to ship in 2006 as part of the Windows "Longhorn" operating system. In addition, Microsoft is making these technologies available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft Avalon and Indigo Community Technology Preview March 2005 (Updated)

Indigo and Avalon are the codenames for two strategic developer technologies that Microsoft plans to ship in 2006 as part of the Windows “Longhorn” operating system. In addition, Microsoft is making these technologies available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The Indigo and Avalon Community Technology Preview (CTP) enables developers to experiment with early builds of these technologies, get acquainted with the development experience, and provide Microsoft with feedback.

Indigo is the codename for Microsoft’s unified programming model for building connected systems. Avalon is the code name for Microsoft’s unified presentation subsystem for Windows.

MSDN ”Longhorn” Developer Center Launches

As we previously reported, the “Longhorn” Developer Center on MSDN was going to be launched today. Microsoft first unveiled these plans in late September in preparation for this years Professional Developers Conference ‘03, an event where 7,000 attendees will receive Build 4051 of the next generation operating system.

Dozens of feature articles are now available covering everything from Aero and Avalon to Indigo and WinFS. Chris Sells, Editor of the MSDN content team, has also announced that there will be discussion groups available. You can view the MSDN Newsgroup page here. Users will be able to access the group by both NNTP Newsreaders, such as Outlook Express, and Web-based clients.
