Test 2 is scheduled for release July 19, marking the developmental freeze of the Fedora Core 6 release. No new features after this point. Fedora Core 4 Test 2 is now available for download. This release includes GNOME 2.10, KDE 3.4, OpenOffice.org 1.9.89, PHP 5.0.4, and MySQL 4.1.10a. Raleigh, NC (HC) - The Fedora Project today announced the second test release of Fedora Core 4, bringing new technology to Linux users everywhere, and the first release of Fedora Core to support PPC out of the box.

Designed as a general purpose operating system for a variety of uses, Fedora Core 4 Test 2 offers various improvements over Fedora Core 3. People who have used Test 1 will notice the following improvements:

- GNOME updated to 2.10 final

- KDE updated to 3.4.0 final

- Firefox updated to 1.0.2

- OpenOffice.org update to 1.9.89

- many various bugfixes

Users were cautioned against using Fedora Core Test 2 in production environments. Reminding the users that it’s a test release, Otto said “There’s no guarantee that it won’t eat your data or fail to install. It could even cause an alien takeover of your humble town.”

Fedora Core 4 Test 2 is now available for download. This release includes GNOME 2.10, KDE 3.4, OpenOffice.org 1.9.89, PHP 5.0.4, and MySQL 4.1.10a. Raleigh, NC (HC) - The Fedora Project today announced the second test release of Fedora Core 4, bringing new technology to Linux users everywhere, and the first release of Fedora Core to support PPC out of the box.

Designed as a general purpose operating system for a variety of uses, Fedora Core 4 Test 2 offers various improvements over Fedora Core 3. People who have used Test 1 will notice the following improvements:

- GNOME updated to 2.10 final

- KDE updated to 3.4.0 final

- Firefox updated to 1.0.2

- OpenOffice.org update to 1.9.89

- many various bugfixes

Users were cautioned against using Fedora Core Test 2 in production environments. Reminding the users that it’s a test release, Otto said “There’s no guarantee that it won’t eat your data or fail to install. It could even cause an alien takeover of your humble town.”

The CentOS team is pleased to announce availability of CentOS 4.0 i386 (ia32). This product supports i586 and i686 processors, including all compatible platforms. Major new features include the Linux 2.6 Kernel, SELinux, udev replacing the /dev system, Xorg, MySQL4, CyrusIMAPD, Gnome 2.8 and KDE 3.3. These improvements along with many more are detailed in the release notes available online.

ISSUES:

There are no known issues. The system installers have been tested extensively in house by the CentOS Developers and Testers. Known good install methods include CD-Rom, HTTP, FTP, PXE, NFS and local Hard Drive based.

All fixes and updates released by the upstream provider up to 28th Feb 2005 have been incorporated into the main package tree.

The CentOS 4 RPM Signing Key is available from our master mirror network and can be imported as: rpm –import
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/RPM-GPG-KEY-centos4 (Note: this is a final release key, the CentOS 4 Beta and CentOS 4 rc1 key cannot be used to verify CentOS 4 packages.)

If you are presently running CentOS 4 Beta we recommend a "linux upgradeany" upgrade install using the CD Installation Set. If you are running CentOS 4 rc1, you can use the "yum upgrade" command to move your installation to CentOS 4. However, you might want to keep in mind that debug info present in CentOS 4 rc1 has now been removed in CentOS 4, therefore the packages are smaller in size. A full reinstall still remains the best option.

Due to the large number of changes in the core system of CentOS4, including the introduction of Udev and SELinux on a 2.6 Kernel, yum based update and upgrade options are not safe methods to upgrade from CentOS 3, and would cause unpredictable results.

Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks. Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks.

Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time.

Gaim supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer (coming soon), away messages, typing notification, and MSN window closing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, and more.

Gaim runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq).

Gaim integrates well with GNOME 2 and KDE 3.1’s system tray, as well as Windows’s own system tray. This allows you to work with Gaim without requiring the buddy list window to be up at all times.
