Microsoft Windows e-XPedition

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Apparently, and according to sources at Microsoft, Longhorn has been the much-mentioned codename for the next-generation Windows technology, a Microsoft mole came to us at the weekend with some news of high-level branding discussions that appear to have yielded a name for the new Windows. It could all just be the rankest of speculation, however.

Microsoft Windows e-XPedition.

Expedition, geddit? Apparently, marketing suits are happy that the name evokes ideas of the ‘e-home’ as well as the familiar ‘XP’ and Media Centre ‘Edition’, elements of which are all found in Longhorn. It also echoes the ‘Where do you want to go today?’ slogan, which has become a Microsoft catchphrase.

We couldn’t get any confirmation of the name from anyone within Microsoft, so you can treat this one as a rumour for now. We are, however, expecting an announcement pretty soon - possibly at WinHEC, to counteract the negative buzz of not actually showing a Beta version of the OS there.

Will man land on Mars before Longhorn ships? We think we should be told.

Windows 2000/XP Hotfixes Now Contain Longhorn Files

Monday, May 12th, 2008

In a bizarre Microsoft Knowledge Base Article , Microsoft has documented that one of its Hotfixes for Windows 2000 and Windows XP described as “Computer Takes a Long Time to Shut Down After the System Writes to the SD Media Card”, contains Microsoft Windows Code-Name Longhorn build 4050 files. Listed in the file list are the following:

  • 06-Oct-2003 19:57 Sdbus.inf

  • 06-Oct-2003 19:53 6.0.4050.1 Sdbus.sys
  • 06-Oct-2003 19:53 6.0.4050.1 Sdhcinst.dll
  • 06-Oct-2003 19:58 Sffdisk.inf
  • 06-Oct-2003 19:53 6.0.4050.1 Sffdisk.sys
  • 06-Oct-2003 19:53 6.0.4050.1 Sffp_sd.sys

As this hotfix isn’t public we can’t confirm that these files actually exist so we have to trust Microsoft’s Knowledge Base Article which are often inaccurate. We’re a bit confused as to why Microsoft would include Longhorn alpha files in a hotfix designed for Windows XP and Windows 2000. Perhaps this is the future for 2000 and XP, solve their problems with Longhorn, who knows. If anyone gets hold of the hotfix, drop us a line

Microsoft Codename Longhorn 4029?

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

MSBetas report : These are the first screenshots of a post-4015 main build to leak from Microsoft, and if you don’t believe me, go check the underground and find out what’s circulating about.

Not only are these the first screenshots, but we were the first site to obtain them, and therefore we shall be the first site to leak them. However, because of the enormous bandwidth drain we will undoubtedly suffer as people link to our site, we will be releasing these shots as a series, which will continue over the next couple of weeks, unveiling feature after feature which is currently present in the Longhorn development tree.
