    Mozilla Stops development

    Thursday, May 15th, 2008

    The Mozilla Foundation may be ending development of its application suite, but the open-source combination of a Web browser, e-mail client and Web-authoring tool appears likely to continue with the help of its friends.Mozilla this week changed development course with the suite, announcing that it no longer plans to release Mozilla 1.8 despite earlier betas of the update. Instead, it will end suite development with the current Version 1.7 line and instead focus on its standalone Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail client.

    While the foundation is retiring the official Mozilla suite, it is open to helping developers in the Mozilla community sustain it on their own.

    Mandrakelinux 10.2 Beta 3 released

    Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

    Get it via FTP and bitorrent., or directly under the directories on the mirrors, inside Mandrakelinux/devel/10.2/i586, to have a full access to the 10400 packages. ISO images have a subset of 1857 packages. Check the wiki for the schedule of the next beta release.Right now 2100 bugs have been reported since the beginning of the development period of 10.2, and 2017 have been resolved (1250 fixed, 200 invalids, 200 duplicates and 200 old). During the same period last year, for the 10.0, there were 2200 reported bugs at the end of February, but only 1600 resolved. This is better this year! There is fewer bugs and more are resolved! Moreover, as shown in this history table, we have now 2000 packages more compared to 10.0!

    As far as packages are concerned, we still do not have a lot of feedback via drakstat. Please use this tool and upload your statistics! This is completely anonymous and help us a lot to know what packages to include. Nevertheless I will try to write an article about the 130 reports we have received so far. I have changed a little bit the packages included into the CDs for the beta 3, now I managed to include mozilla-firefox, mozilla-thunderbird and nvu, but I have removed galeon, as well as kernel-i686-up-64GB.

    You will notice some changes in the bootsplash, thanks to Elisabeth. I remind you that you can use the all.img file, located into install/images, to boot the Mandrakelinux installation with a USB key, as long as your system is able to boot on USB devices. You can also just burn the small boot.iso file and keep the ISO images on your hard drive. If you are installing with the CDs, you can copy them on your hard drive during the installation and do not care about them afterward to install new packages. Take care to create a big enough / or /var partition! Of course if you have a high-bandwidth internet access, the easiest is to add a internet source, and have a direct access to the ten thousands packages of the 10.2.

    Some package versions & new features:

    * kernel 2.6.10

    * Glibc 2.3.4 and gcc 3.4.3

    * New KDE 3.3.2 is compiled with the ‘-fvisibility=hidden’ option of gcc to accelerate the linkage step at the program start (this option hides all the internal symbols of the application and eases the linker work to start the binary), the latest version of Gnome, 2.8.1, as well as GTK 2.6.1.

    * New features during the installation procedure, including a new, more efficient package-processing algorithm and the capability to copy all packages to the hard drive before installation completion.

    * Installation may boot from a USB key

    * Mozilla-firefox replaces Mozilla

    * Gimp 2.2, cdrecord 2.01.01a21 with DVD R Dual Layers support, OpenOffice.org 1.1.4, Postgresql 8.0, MySQL 4.1.9

    * new tool: Drakstats
